Bombay Chutney Sandwich is almost synonymous to Bombay or Mumbai Street Food. This is a very simple, quick, easy sandwich recipe and the delicious veggies and sandwich masala with lots of grated Amul cheese makes it unique and delicious!
Bread is a staple in most households. This Bombay Chutney Sandwich also uses staple vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, etc. that are readily available in most households. So putting together this sandwich is super convenient and easy.
What makes this Bombay Chutney Sandwich special is the mint-coriander chutney, the Amul cheese, and the sandwich masala. I love to eat this sandwich with the popular Indian soda/beverage Thumbs Up! The addition of boiled potatoes truly balances out lots of flavors from the chutney and masala. Don’t skip it!
Bombay Chutney Sandwich also make s a great picnic or travel snack. If you don’t want the sandwich to get soggy, carry the cut vegetables, chutney, etc. in a separate box and assemble it when you are ready to eat.
This is a vegetarian Sandwich. It can be made gluten-free by using gluten-free bread. It can be made vegan by either replacing the cheese and butter with Vegan version of the same or skipping the cheese and butter altogether.
Ingredients
- 4 slices Bread
- ½ tablespoon Butter
- 1 tablespoon Green Coriander-Mint Chutney
- 1 Potato boiled
- 1 Tomato
- 1 Cucumber
- ½ Onion
- 1 teaspoon Sandwich masala (you can use chaat masala if you don't have sandwich masala handy)
- 1 tablespoon Ketchup optional
- 2 oz. Amul cheese, grated If you don't have Amul cheese, you can use grated mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Boil and peel the potato. Peel cucumber.
- Cut potato, cucumber, tomato, onion (optional) into thin roundels. Take the bread slices. Cut the sides (optional).
- Spread butter on a slice. On top of that, spread the Green Coriander-Mint Chutney. Arrange the veggies on top of it. Sprinkle sandwich masala. Grate some cheese on top. Spread the ketchup on the other slice, and top it on the slice which has veggies – ketchup side down. Grate some more cheese on top! Repeat to make the other sandwich.

Mint-Coriander Chutney | Cilantro Chutney | Green Chutney
Ingredients
- ½ cup Coriander / Cilantro leaves (roughly chopped. Ok to include stems)
- ¼ cup Mint leaves
- ½ inch Ginger
- 2 Green chilies (small)
- 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
- ¼ teaspoon Salt or to taste
- ⅛ teaspoon Black salt (Sanchar)
- ⅛ teaspoon Chaat masala (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Peanuts (optional)
Instructions
- Wash and roughly chop veggies and herbs listed above.
- Grind into a chutney, until smooth. You may add a few teaspoons of water if you want liquid chutney.
- Use the chutney as a dip, condiment, sauce, dressing or to apply on a bread slice to make a sandwich. Store it in an airtight bottle in the refrigerator. The lemon juice helps it stay fresh and green for a few days.
This Indian Sandwich has many variations. You can make it just Chutney Sandwich by spreading the chutney between two bread slices and skipping everything else. You can make Cucumber Sandwich by using the bread, chutney, and cucumber.
